MAUNDY THURSDAY ⎮ APRIL 14TH 7PM

Join us in person, or stream the service online!

What does "Maundy" mean?

Maundy is derived from the Latin mandatum (also the origin of the English word mandate). It is used in the Latin translation of John 13:34, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” Mandatum is the word for commandment. In this passage, Jesus was explaining why He washed the feet of the disciples and the significance of His doing so.

Maundy Thursday gatherings at Grace Church are simple services of Scripture, song, and supplication as we seek to hear and heed Jesus’ “new commandment” to love one another (“Maundy” is derived from the Latin mandatum, commandment). All are welcome to join us as we replay the events of Jesus’ final night with his disciples in preparation for Good Friday and Easter.

“When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, ‘Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.  If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.  For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.  Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. … A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.’"

John 13:12-1734
